Meme Depot, which launched earlier this week, is a startup aiming to create a new category called “meme tech.” More specifically, founder Alex Taub said Meme Depot’s goal is to create a comprehensive archive of every meme there is.
According to Taub, Meme Depot is different from Cheezburger and Know Your Meme, which he describes as media companies. Know Your Meme, for example, is the place you go when you want a meme explained. Meme Depot is more about organizing and discovering memes — for example, going to a page where you can see every Kim Kardashian meme.
Amanda Silberling wrote a fun piece about the launch, where she mentioned the supposedly common practice of keeping reaction GIFs on your desktop computer or phone. (I’ve never done this, which probably just confirms how uncool I am.) Meme Depot is trying to create the biggest, best version of that folder.
As for monetization, you can use cryptocurrency to buy a pass to a meme party, which is basically a chat room, and then the pass could help you earn money if you were an early member of a popular meme party. That said, you can also use Meme Depot without engaging with the crypto side.
